LG have recently announced the launch of their new W20 series of screens, featuring a range of features including IPS panel technology, and even RGB LED backlighting in some cases. These new screens and aimed primarily at graphics use and for people who need accurate colours. "With the W20 series, we are serving both graphics beginners and users with professional demands”, explains Nils Seib, Manager for Public Relations, LG Electronics Deutschland GmbH.
W2420R - 24" IPS panel with RGB LED backlighting covering a reported 100% of the AdobeRGB colour space, which equates to 135% of the NTSC colour space. This model also features hardware based calibration using the LGE Calibrator tool, and a light protection hood. The screen will offer a 1920 x 1200 resolution, 6ms G2G response time (although for some reason this is specified as ISO on the German LG sites - fairly sure it should be G2G though), 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles. The W2420R features a 12-bit LUT This model comes in a matte black finish as shown above
W2420P - 24", 1920 x 1200 resolution, 5ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles. This model comes in a silver finish.
W2220P - 22", 1920 x 1200 resolution, 5ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles. This model also comes in a silver finish (as shown above). Interestingly this appears to be the first 1080p compatible IPS based 22" model in the market
All models in the W20 range feature 2x HDMI interfaces, DVI-D (HDCP supported) and a D-sub interface for connectivity. Each comes with a height-adjustable rotating and tilting base as well as touch-sensitive surfaces and hotkeys.
The LG W2420R is available from May priced at 1,630.00 Euro, while the W2420P and W2220P are available from July and cost 400.00 Euro for the 24-inch model and 260.00 Euro for the 22-inch model.

Looks like the W2220P will use a slightly updated version of the panel used in the Dell 2209WA, which looks as though it is popular as a low cost graphic and media monitor at the moment.
They will use In Plane Switching (IPS) panels from LG.Digital with a slightly higher spec than the one used in the Dell monitor.
Differences noticed from the LG Germany site is that the native resolution is higher, 1920x1200 (Dell is 1680x1050) which results in a smaller pixel pitch of 0.247 (Dell 0.282) It also seems to be less power hungry <40W (Dell 52W).
Above differences will probably not make any significant difference to the final performance of the two monitors, but when they appear, it would be fascinating to see if there is any difference in the colour rendition or whether the higher resolution makes any difference, or not.
This is the 2nd 22" IPS based panel that comes from the LG.Display factory (First was used in the Dell 2209WA) and it looks like it is the first 22" IPS panel with full 1080p (with HDCP compliance for Blu-ray) and two HDMI sockets. With Blu-ray material there will be black band at the top and bottom of the picture, but this usually does not bother me (monitor is standard PC aspect ratio of 16:10 rather than 1080p standard 16:9).
Looks like this might be a good all round monitor for photography, PC work and also 1080p multimedia as it has all the other good characteristics of IPS panels; 178 degree all-round view, 5ms response, hotkeys on the front for sRGB, text, film, etc. Two HDMI is usefull, means you do not have to switch your PC on if you want to use an external set top box like (in UK) Freeview, Freesat or a games console or Blu-ray/DVD player!
Unfortunately, it looks as though we will have to wait until July to see if it can be compared to the Dell 2209WA?
