Intel® Matrix Storage Manager
Can I move my RAID volume to another system and access the contents?
The hard drive members of a RAID volume can be moved to another system and the contents of that RAID volume can then be accessed. This may be necessary in the event of a motherboard failure.
Requirements
The new system must support Intel® Matrix Storage Technology (i.e. RAID) as well as the RAID volume level of the RAID volume on the hard drives being moved.
As an example, a RAID 5 volume should not be moved to a system with the Intel® 82801ER I/O controller hub (ICH5R) because that I/O controller does not support RAID 5.
Warning
If the new system includes a different I/O controller than the one on which the RAID volume was created, you should not attempt to boot to the RAID volume. You should boot to an operating system on another non-RAID hard drive or RAID volume and from there, access the contents of the original RAID volume.
As an example, if you are moving a RAID 0 volume created on a system with the Intel 82801ER I/O controller hub (ICH5R) to a system with the Intel® 82801GR I/O controller hub (ICH7R), you should not boot to the RAID 0 volume, but should install an operating system on a non-RAID hard drive or a new RAID volume and access the contents of the original RAID 0 volume from within that OS.
If the new system includes the same I/O controller, this warning does not apply.

RAID is not readily moved to a new system. When using a single disk, it is relatively straightforward to move the disk to a new system. Simply connect it to the new system, provided it has the same interface available. However, this is not so easy with a RAID array. A RAID BIOS must be able to read metadata from the array members in order to successfully construct the array and make it accessible to an operating system. Since RAID controller makers use different formats for their metadata (even controllers of different families from the same manufacturer may use incompatible metadata formats) it is virtually impossible to move a RAID array to a different controller. When moving a RAID array to a new system, plans should be made to move the controller as well. With the popularity of motherboard integrated RAID controllers, this is extremely difficult to accomplish. Generally, it is possible to move the RAID array members and controllers as a unit, and software RAID in Linux and Windows Server Products can also work around this limitation, but software RAID has other limitations (mostly performance related).
