NO, GUYS, it wasn't what you may have thought from the title, i.e. Tukwilacide - despite the increasingly frequent talks about good ship Itanic's cruise into the sunset, which I myself expect to happen sometime in not so far future. Intel showed the first wafers with gigantic Tukwila (Itanium 3) dies on them.
I had a chance to take a quick zoom photo of the dies themselves - they really are big. I had Penryn and Nehalem wafers next to it, and the size proportion Penryn : Nehalem : Tukwila was, roughly, 1 : 2 : 4. Before you ask - no I wasn't allowed to take the comparative photo with all of them together.
As mentioned before, Tukwila integrates four "improved" Montvale-type Itanium CPU cores with an integrated FB-DIMM memory controller and up to six QPI channels - so, while single thread core performance might not jump up too much, large jobs should scale much better. Anyway, let's see it when it comes... Montvale is still due before that, if I'm right? |
