NVIDIA is having problems with Quad SLI with GeForce 7950GX2?

NVIDIA is expected to launch its GeForce 7950GX2 graphics card very soon and even if our information about a launch on May 30 still stands it's not impossible that NVIDIA may change this now. We have now received information from an anonymous source that indicate that there could be problems with NVIDIA's new monster card. NVIDIA namely launched new graphics card drivers for solely GeForce 7950GX2 on May 15 and with this driver you could read the following;
"This driver doesn't enable Multi-GPU mode by default."
According to our source there are problems with GeForce 7950GX2 in Quad SLI configurations. A GeForce 7950GX2 card with its two graphics circuits are suppose to work excellent, but four graphics circuits are causing a mess.
We haven't received any details about the problems and judging from the drivers the problems are related to the drivers as NVIDIA has simply deactivated the Multi-GPU mode with the drivers. The hardware is, as far as we know, working perfectly fine. This is of course strengthened by the fact that GeForce 7950GX2 cards have already been sent out for review. But the fact that drivers posted as late as May 15 lack support for Quad SLI could mean that NVIDIA has a some optimizing left to do before launching its retail version of the Quad SLI platform. Considering the bugs we've heard of with GeForce 7900GX2 Quad SLI it is no surprise that NVIDIA has more work to do with the drivers.
We are expecting to see an official launch this month though, not the least as cards have already started to be listed by stores; GeForce 7950GX2 can be found at the Scandinavian store Webhallen at 5995SEK ($820). Only listed though, but this is at least an indication for that cards are coming and at a price much lower than we've anticipated. |
