According to our source, the next-generation AMD RS690 IGP is approaching its final stage of design, where the design has been stepped into version A12. On a meanwhile, most of the manufactures have already got their board design ready, so the product is soon to be available on time in early 2007. In addition, RS690 will be fabricated in 80nm process by UMC’s Fab 12A, according to the white paper. Although, TSM will remain to be the main manufacturer of AMD chipset in the future, but it’s expected that more and more AMD chipset will be fabricated by UMC. Indeed, 80nm AMD RV516 and RS535 have already been manufacturing by UMC’s Fab12A, and some 90nm products are given to UMC’s Fab8F. The change in manufacturing proportion between TSMC and UMC has been drawn into a great concern in the market.
Soon after the completion of acquisition, AMD revealed the company’s plan to merge ATI’s chipset under the brand of AMD. The brand of graphic division of ATI is the only one be kept exceptionally. The previous ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 has been renamed as AMD 690G Chipset with ATI Radeon X1250 Graphics.
Being the world first IGP with build-in HDMI, the AMD 690G is a host of technologies that provide a thorough solution for digital home. These include Radeon X700 graphical core, which support for Direct X9.0, Shader Model 2.0, AVIVO, H.264 and VC1 for video encoding and decoding, Blu –Ray and HD-DVD. However, Hyper-Transport in AMD 690G remains in version 1.0 that restrict the maximum transfer rate at 2GT/s. Additionally, AMD 690G provides 1 PCI-E x16 and 4 PCI-E x1, and is coupled with SB600.
RS690 is packaged in 21mm x 21mm 465FCBGA, which is Pin to Pin compatible to IGP RS485. Therefore, it’s said some RS690 PCB is designed for both of them for cost saving. Furthermore, RS690 has also got a branch of family suit for each market, besides RS690C which has no TMDS support, there also are 3 for mobile platform: RS690M, RS690MC for low profile without TMDS support, and RS690T for high performance with Sideport Memory support.
Most of the tier 1 manufactures including ASUS, Gigabyte, ECS and MSI has announced their plan for RS690 product and soon to release them in early 2007.
