Socket AM2 X2s with 1MB cache delisted

Yesterday, we reported that AMD planned to discontinue its Socket AM2 Athlon 64 X2 processors with 1MB of cache per core. Rumors put the move off until a set of substantial price cuts expected from AMD in late July, but it looks like AMD is already going ahead with its plans. DailyTech reports that Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 4400+, and 4800+ processors for Socket AM2 have been removed from the listings of a number of online retailers, leaving only X2 3800+, 4200+, 4600+, and 5000+ chips with 512KB of cache per core for the new socket.
A search on Newegg for all dual-core Socket AM2 chips only yields a single 1MB Athlon 64 X2—a 4400+—and it's out of stock. Similar results can be seen on e-tailers like Mwave, TigerDirect, and ZipZoomFly, where no 1 MB AM2 chips are listed at all aside from the top-of-the-line Athlon 64 FX-62. It's odd to see AMD ditching those chips so quickly after their launch less than one month ago, especially since the company even introduced a new Athlon 64 X2 4000+ with 1 MB of cache on May 23 to fill the gap between the X2 3800+ and 4200+.


Dell seen rolling out AMD-system in Sept.
JUN. 13 5:57 P.M. ET Dell Inc. could roll out a desktop computer based on an Advanced Micro Devices Inc. chip as early as September, according to a Wall Street analyst.

The report comes less than a month after Dell Inc. said it would begin using chips made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc., spurning its longtime partner Intel Corp.

"Citigroup Investment Research has confirmed from industry sources that Dell will offer an AMD based desktop in September of this year. No details of box configuration are available. We note that AMD has recently expressed confidence that they will gain share in the second half of the year, and we point to this win as the basis for this confidence," Citigroup analyst Glen Yeung wrote in a note.

Yeung noted that although the Dell news is good, the company's results could get nipped by price cuts, weak computer sales and share lost to Intel in the server space.
Shares of AMD closed down $1.29, or 5 percent, at $24.39 in Friday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, Dell's stock added 21 cents to end at $25.10 on the Nasdaq, and lost 1 cent in aftermarket activity.

只不过是要加大双核心出货比例，就不得不缩小die面积而已。下半年还卖单核心，就彻底只能打70美元以下的价格区间了。

DELL中国好像有否认。不过从方方面面的消息看，似乎是真的。台湾那边的厂商说从DELL采购零部件看出来的。
