AMD hurt by merger charges, lower chip prices

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said late Tuesday it swung to a fourth-quarter loss, hurt by charges related to its acquisition of ATI Technologies and a price war with larger rival Intel Corp. that crimped AMD's profit margins.
The company also offered a weak sales forecast for the current quarter and warned of a tough price environment, sending its shares down more than 4% in after-hours trading.
AMD reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $574 million, or $1.08 a share. That compares with net income of $96 million, or 21 cents a share, in last year's same period. The latest results include $550 million in acquisition-related charges.
The No. 2 maker of PC chips said sales for the three months ended Dec. 31 were $1.77 billion -- matching Wall Street's estimate. In the fourth quarter, it said microprocessor shipments rose 26% from a year ago, driven by laptop chip shipments.
Excluding the ATI Tech deal that closed Oct. 24, AMD said its operating income tumbled 77% to $63 million, hurt by much lower average selling prices for its chips used in corporate servers. Its gross margin - a key profitability metric - fell to 40% of sales, down from 57% a year ago.
Even though AMD stuck by its forecast for 2007 gross margins of 50%, some on Wall Street consider that an aggressive target.
"AMD had to make some adjustments in prices and that won't change all that quickly," said Cody Acree, analyst at Stifel Nicolaus, which rates AMD a hold and Intel a buy.
blah blah blah..........................
Still, AMD offered a soft sales forecast for the first quarter of $1.6 billion to $1.7 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had estimated $1.82 billion.
Ruiz, who has made AMD a much more formidable competitor to Intel, also admitted that "competition is going to be tougher, perhaps, than we had originally planned." End of Story |
