After years of PC cooling fans remaining much the same, this last year has seen a few manufacturers pushing to put a spin on the traditional fan design to help increase performance without increasing noise. One of the first fans that passed through our hands with this design was Silverstone's AP121 - a quiet fan with a very focused exhaust that made it great for CPU cooler and radiator applications. After a year without much changes to their fan lineup, Noctua has now debuted their own entry into this market - the NF-F12 PWM. The NF-F12 is a PWM controlled fan with a very unique looking design which is supposed to better focus airflow and reduce noise, all from a fan which also draws considerably less power than most 120mm fans do.

The front of the NF-F12 box is white with a wireframe rendering of the fan as the background - a similar design premise as we've seen on past Noctua products too. A small window on the front gives a teaser of the fan inside and shows off some of the unique design features also found on this fan.

A complete specifications chart for the NF-F12 is found in the lower right corner of the first back panel - before the box is opened. The small size of this amongst the large amount of text from the paragraphs above actually resulted in me overlooking it a few times before catching it there.

Noctua has included a comprehensive bundle with the NF-F12 - more than I've seen with their previous fans. The cable on the NF-F12 is short - only 8.5" long - which saves a lot of space if you're near a fan header. However, if a fan header isn't nearby then a 13" extension cable is also included. A low noise adapter (LNA) is included, along with a PWM Y-Cable in case you'd like one PWM port to control two fans. All cables are sleeved in a very tight rubber mesh sleeving and all cables, excluding the one directly on the fan, have sticker labels telling you their purpose (stickers which don't stick very well to the rubber sleeving). Also found in the package are the regular rubber vibration absorbing mounts, metal screws and a short (to the point) installation/tips guide.

The NF-F12 is a very unique fan which has a design that is much different than any Noctua fans I've reviewed in the past. To start, the blades have a much larger surface area and a significantly shallower angle to them compared to the NF-S12B fan I had last tested from Noctua. The NF-S12B also had cutouts at the end of each blade which were supposed to better channel air and reduce noise - those are also gone on the NF-F12 design. Spinning the fan around to the back will show you why.

The back of most fans have 4 support columns that hold the motor in place in the middle of the frame. The NF-F12 has replaced that traditional support structure with 11 carefully angled 'blades' going from the center hub straight out to the outter frame. Noctua has called this their 'Focused Flow Frame' because this design helps keep a more focused airflow column exhausting out of the fan. There's three small notches on each 'blade' which serve a purpose best described by Noctua's adjective loving marketing team - "varying angular distance and vortex control notches" - a mouthful.

By now you've probably notice that each corner of the NF-F12 is brown. These brown corners are actually rubber pads and offer an integrated solution to absorbing vibrations between the fan and the surface it's mounted on. I like this design because not all places I mount my fans in can be accommodating of those rubber vibration absorbing mounts and still require screws to be used. This way, even if I need to mount the fan with a regular screw, I can still benefit from some vibration absorption. These rubber pads are easily removable in the event they hinder your installation.

Also worth pointing out is the stepped inlet desin - i.e. the part of the frame that's beveled in on the front of the fan. Noctua's marketing team has simply dubbed this the 'stepped inlet design'. I'd be very curious to see test results showing if this design really does offer any performance benefit from a technical, not marketing, perspective.

The NF-F12 is Noctua's first PWM fan, and it's been a while coming. While other manufacturers have had PWM fans for years, Noctua has held out and has kept to shipping their fans and coolers with a pair of resistor cables - the LNA (low noise adapter) and ULNA (ultra low noise adapter). These cables give you the possibility of three distinct operating modes for each fan - stock, low speed or ultra low speed - which allows Noctua to provide solid specifications on each setting (such as airflow, noise, air pressure, etc). With a PWM fan, Noctua can now only provide minimum and maximum specifications because the PWM controller will dictate any number of fan speeds between the two. However, most PWM equipped motherboards will allow you to choose various PWM noise settings in the BIOS so you can customize your experience based on your requirements of noise vs. performance.

All the Noctua fans I've ever reviewed have had Noctua's SSO bearing. Without getting too technical, this bearing is designed and optimized for long life and quiet operation. After years of success with this bearing, Noctua has revised it and come out with the SSO version 2 bearing - found in the NF-F12.

The NF-F12 has a minimum rotation speed of 300 RPM and a maximum speed of 1500 RPM. Noctua gives noise level ratings of 18.6dBA with the LNA and 22.4dBA without the LNA. I'm going to assume the 22.4dBA to be a maximum noise level without the LNA, as the PWM controller will likely run the fan much quieter than that during regular use. Due to the focused flow design of the NF-F12, it has a very high static pressure of around 2.61mm/H2O. To compare that to a couple other fans, the Noctua NF-S12B has a static pressure of 1.31mm/H2O and the Nexus 120mm Real Silence Case fan, another of my favourites, has a static pressure of 1.2mm/H2O. Having a high static pressure makes the NF-F12 great for applications on heatsinks and radiators.

Installation & Testing:
To test out the NF-F12 I'm going to put it against the NF-S12B and Silverstone AP121 fans. Comparison with the NF-S12B will show it's performance over a standard Noctua 120mm fan, and comparison against the Silverstone AP121 will show how it fares against a fan that's also designed to focus airflow, but using a different design premise than the NF-F12.
All fans will be tested on my Noctua NF-C12 CPU cooler and no other fans will be attached to this cooler but the one being tested. CPU temperatures will be recorded after 30 minutes of system idle and again after 30 minutes of load in Prime 95. Results are graphed and discussed below.

With PWM disabled, the NF-F12 tied the Silverstone AP121 for lowest idle temperature of the bunch, coming in at 32 degrees Celsius. With PWM enabled and set to 'standard' mode, the NF-F12 came in at the highest idle temperature, only 0.25 degrees higher than the NH-C14 with the NF-S12B fan attached. As you can see in my chart above, no matter what fan I used, idle temperatures were all within a degree of each other anyway.

Load temperatures saw greater variation than the idle temperatures did. With PWM set to 'standard', the NF-F12 came in with the highest temperature, 56.6 degrees, which is about 10 degrees higher than I achieved with any of the other fans attached. However, I will note that the NF-F12 was dead quiet at load when PWM was enabled. With PWM shut off, the NF-F12 once again took first place with a 45 degree load temperature, only 0.5 degrees off from the Silverstone AP121.

In terms of noise, I'd put the NF-F12 and NF-S12B on the same playing field, as it was extremely difficult for my ears to tell the difference between the two. However, as mentioned in the last paragraph, when PWM is enabled, the NF-F12 runs dead silent most of the time. PWM is an advantage that the NF-F12 has over other Noctua fans because it eliminates the need for the resistor cables which can only offer fixed fan speeds. Instead, PWM will allow the NF-F12 to run as quiet as it can until the extra cooling is needed at higher loads causing it to speed up. When all fans were run at stock speeds, the Silverstone AP121 came out ahead with the quietest noise level of the bunch. Looking at the performance I achieved with the Silverstone AP121 vs. the Noctua NF-F12 with PWM disabled, I might have a hard time justifying the higher price of the NF-F12 which is almost $10 more than the AP121. Looking at the numbers of these two fans, they both have the exact same noise level rating so the difference could also be impacted by subjective perception too (that is, how my ears hear the fans compared to someone elses ears, or expensive measuring equipment). Regardless of the specifics, I'd still like it to be clear that all three of these fans are amongst what I would consider to be the top 10 quietest fans I have reviewed to date and despite the differences over one another, they are all still very quiet overall.

Other areas that the NF-F12 excelled at over both the NF-S12B and the Silverstone AP121 are in terms of power consumption and lifespan. The NF-F12, as I mentioned earlier, consumes only 0.6 watts where as the NF-S12B consumes 1.2 watts and the AP121 will draw around 1.08 watts. In terms of lifespan, the NF-F12 should last around 150,000 hours, which is three times that of the Silverstone, but the same as the NF-S12B which is based off an earlier revision of the bearing currently in the NF-F12.

To Conclude...
Overall, the NF-F12 probably has the most unique design I've seen on any fan today. Noctua has clearly taken a look at every angle and surface of a fan and found a way to tweak and optimize it for a specific purpose - providing strong, focused and quiet airflow. That is topped off with an included bundle that seems to cover the accessories needed for every possible use of the fan. The NF-F12 also excels with it's long life and extremely low power consumption (half that of most traditional 120mm fans).

In my testing, the NF-F12 pulled out ahead on all CPU temperature tests when running at stock speeds. With PWM enabled, the NF-F12 was certainly the quietest of the bunch, but did suffer in terms of having the highest CPU temperatures too. However, despite it's great performance, without PWM enabled the NF-F12 was struggling to be the quietest fan of the group tested and was overtaken by a competing model which also wasn't far off with it's CPU temperatures either.

If I was after a high end fan, the Bentley of computer fans, the NF-F12 would certainly be a great choice as it offers many great features, a packed bundle, long lifespan and low power consumption. However, if I wanted performance and silence and wasn't worried about the specifics like lifespan, then the high $24 price tag may sway me away from the NF-F12 when some competing fans are as much as $10 less.
