I had a chat with Seagate support and some interesting details came up.
I am copying the details here so others can benefit from it:
Nick TS174: Thank you for contacting Seagate Support. How may I help you?
XXX: **o, what is the current firmware on the model I entered?
Nick TS174: SN05
XXX: what about AN05?
Nick TS174: AN05 does not apply to ST31000340NS
XXX: are you sure? there are reports on the net that AN05 did solve a lot of issues for this drive
Nick TS174: I am sure. The only update available for the 1 TB ES.2 drive is SN05. Its possible AN05 was an ealier release of firmware for this device, but I do not think that's the case. From my understanding the AN05 firmware is distributed for 250 GB ES.2 drives only.
XXX: ok, good to know.
XXX: I noticed that the bad sector count in one of my drives was reset to 0 after upgrading to SN05. Is this normal behaviour?
Nick TS174: SN05 can be downloaded by using the following link and certificate.
Nick TS174: Not usre, I will check
Nick TS174: I was advised that it is possible.
XXX: so is this something to worry about or not?
Nick TS174: No, the value should populate again if you run a full zero fill on the drive. One moment, I am conferring with another tech about the AN05 updates.
Nick TS174: What is the nature of the problem you are having that leads to the firmware update request?
XXX: The secure erase bug in SN04 was something I did want to solve
Nick TS174: What problems are you having with SN05?
XXX: no problems. I just want to make sure SN05 is the right one to use
XXX: So how do I run a zero fill on the drive as you mentioned earlier?
Nick TS174: Ok, from my discussion I have found that the AN05 for the 1 TB unit has not been released, still in development.
XXX: so AN05 is then planned for the 1TB unit? Does AN05 solve any bugs SN05 has and what are these?
Nick TS174: And the AN05 only corrects a problem related to certain SAS controllers.
XXX: ok, I did read about these problems. good to know.
Nick TS174: Is there anything else I can help you with?
XXX: so my last question is, how do I run the zero fill on the drives. is there a seagate tool that can do this?
Nick TS174: yes, SeaTools, http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/suppor ... seatoolls/
Nick TS174: SeaTools for Dos has the full zero fill option
XXX: excellent. thank you
Nick TS174: No problem, have a good day |
